What Is Block Salt, and How Is It Different from Tablets or Granules?

Block salt is compressed food-grade sodium chloride formed into solid rectangular blocks — usually around 4kg each — designed to sit in the brine tank of a water softener and dissolve slowly from the bottom up.

Unlike salt tablets, which are individual pellets you pour in by the handful, block salt is loaded as whole blocks. That has one big practical advantage: because the block only dissolves at the waterline and stops once the tank reaches saturation point, it produces far less sludge and mush at the bottom of the tank than tablets or salt granules can leave behind. Less sludge means less frequent tank cleaning and a softener that keeps performing at its rated capacity for longer.

The trade-off is convenience of loading — tablets and granules pour freely, while blocks need to be lowered in by hand (each one on this page comes with a moulded carry handle for exactly that reason).

What is block salt used for?

Block salt is used exclusively in water softeners with a block-fed brine tank. The solid 4kg blocks dissolve slowly to create the brine solution the softener uses to remove calcium and magnesium (hardness minerals) from your water supply.

Is block salt better than salt tablets?

Block salt tends to create less sludge at the bottom of the brine tank because it dissolves evenly from the outside in and stops once the brine is saturated. Salt tablets are easier to pour in, but they can dissolve unevenly over time. Which is “better” depends on what your softener model is designed to use – always check compatibility first..

How often should I top up my water softener with block salt?

 Most households top up every 4–8 weeks, though this varies with household size and local water hardness. A good habit is checking the brine tank monthly and topping up whenever the salt level drops below roughly a third of the tank.

Can I use any brand of block salt in my softener?

Why has my water softener stopped softening my water even though there's salt left?

This is usually caused by low-purity salt leaving residue that blocks the brine valve, an empty tank going unnoticed, or the block bridging (forming a hard crust with an air gap underneath so water can't reach it). Using consistent, high-purity food-grade block salt reduces the risk of bridging and residue build-up.

Is Himalayan block salt the same as pink Himalayan cooking salt?
